Figurative Line Drawings on Paper: Freeman W. Butts

9 August - 30 September 2021
Overview

These line drawings illustrate the suppleness of line people talk about when speaking about Freeman's artwork.  They translate directly into his larger works.

Freeman W. Butts, a renowned Montana artist, has been called a "painter's painter."

Butts began his career in Los Angeles in the mid-1950s during the height of abstract expressionism.  Unlike most artists of that school, however, Butts continued to portray figures boldly.

His works completed in Montana represent his legacy.  In the 1980s through his passing in 1998 he was one of the definitive artists for Bozeman, Livingston, and in fact, in Montana.  His works are in all the museums and many collections in Montana.
