Pastel Drawings: Freeman W. Butts
These pastel drawings by Freeman Butts appear much softer than his paintings on canvas. They have the same sense of line and composition but the pastel lends a kind of transparancy to the works that is easier to see than in his larger works.
Many artists experiment in different mediums. Freeman worked in clay and bronze as well. When a portfolio of pastel drawings is split out from the bulk of his figruative paintings they stand out with their own strengths. The sense of line remains but the color is very subtle, almost transparant. It allows the mind to approach the work rather than the other way around.
